ABOUT THE TUTOR

Steve Vítek – Japanese with experience from Japan, the USA and Europe

I was born in Český Krumlov and in 1980 I graduated in Japanese–English (M.A.) at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. Shortly afterwards I emigrated to West Germany and later to the United States.

In 1985–1986 I worked in Tokyo as a translator for Japan Import Center and from 1987 I spent more than thirty years in the USA as an independent technical translator, specialising mainly in translations of Japanese and German patents into English. In 2018 I moved back to South Bohemia and now I teach Japanese, English and Czech for foreigners privately in České Budějovice and online.

We start from the very basics – pronunciation, simple sentences, everyday situations and your first characters. The goal is for you to start using the language as soon as possible without fear.

In-person lessons take place in my flat in Krajinská Street, a few minutes’ walk from Přemysl Otakar II Square. A calm environment, easy to reach by public transport or on foot.

The standard length of one lesson is 45 minutes. Lessons take place in the centre of České Budějovice or online.

Where do the lessons take place?

In-person lessons take place in my flat in Krajinská Street in České Budějovice, just a short walk from Přemysl Otakar II Square. If you are not from České Budějovice or prefer a different form of learning, we can arrange online lessons (WhatsApp, Zoom, etc.).

Who are the lessons suitable for?

I teach all age groups – from older children and students to adults and seniors. In Japanese and English we always start from where you are now and build step by step on your knowledge and goals。

In which languages do you teach?

I usually teach Japanese and English in Czech. Czech for foreigners is available in English, German, French, Japanese and Czech. Thanks to my many years as a translator I can also help you with subtle differences in meaning between languages。

Is the first introductory lesson free?

The first introductory lesson is free. It is an opportunity for us to get to know each other, set your learning goals and see whether my teaching style suits you. This applies to all languages I teach.
